What is Reiki?

Reiki, pronounced Ray Key, is a non invasive form of hands on healing system developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s in Japan.


During a Reiki healing session, the practitioner places their hands on or above the recipient and channels the healing energy through their crown chakra down their body and out through their hands.


The healer channels the Universal Life Force energy, that energy which is all around us, and infuses life, into the patient, thus promoting healing on the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical levels


Literally, Reiki is translated from Japanese, as ”Universal Life Force Energy” or “Spiritual Energy”. The word is divided into 2 parts: Rei-“wisdom and knowledge of all the Universe” and Ki-which is the life force energy that flows through every living thing- plants, animals and people.

During the Reiki session the practitioner places his or her hands very lightly on or, hovering above the body in a variety of positions. The patient is normally lying down and always remains fully clothed throughout the session as Reiki is so powerful that it will even pass through a plaster cast.


Everyone experiences Reiki differently. Some feel a slight tingling or sensations of warmth, others just a deep relaxation. Others feel rejuvenated and energised. Some even fall asleep.


Reiki is always completely safe and appropriate making it suitable for everyone - children and adults. It benefits people in wonderful and extraordinary ways. It is also highly effective for animals.


Tips for a great Reiki experience

       To get the most out of your Reiki energy healing session I recommend the following:


  • Reflect on one main area of your life that you would like to see a positive change in, one that would have the most impact for you, and see if we can use that as a theme to guide your session

  • Try to minimize stimulants (caffeine, nicotine) or depressants (alcohol) and heavy or junk foods about three to five hours before and after your treatment

  • Arrive promptly to ensure you receive your full session time

  • After your session, spend time in nature and walk around, really feeling your feet on the earth (this will help integrate the healing energies and get you grounded)

  • Drink plenty of water to continue releasing and healing

  • Eat something delicious and nutritious after the treatment to further ground yourself

  • Give yourself time to reflect, journal, meditate, take a soothing shower or bath and relax into your evening

  • Enjoy the aftereffects of the session and follow your guidance as to when you need another one
